Medicine From Our Backyard

Backyard Pharm is a small, locally owned company that originally began on a small 2.5 acre eco-farm in lower Puna, on Hawaii Island called Beach Road Farm. It was founded in 2012 and inspired by the abundance of medicinal herbs and plants and foods that were grown there in the rugged, volcanic jungle near the ocean. Our idea was that a small backyard farm could support the medicinal needs of the people and community that live nearby. The plants that easily grow in an area are many times the same ones that best support the health and well-being of those who live there.

In 2018 when the Lower East Rift zone of Kilauea erupted Backyard Pharm was gratefully moved to the safe and more stable, beautiful land in Laupahoehoe called Haupialani Farm. It is also a small 2.5 acre parcel of land that looks out over the ocean at an elevation of about 600 ft. It is abundant in fruit and cacao trees and also has a large vegetable and herb gardens.

"Plants that easily grow in an area are many times the same ones that best support the health and well-being of those who live there."

Our farm specializes in growing fruits, spices, medicinal herbs, vegetables, a few ducks and many other assorted ornamental and useful plants. We grow all plants that go into our products and invite you to enjoy some of the images that help tell our story.

Locally grown & produced in Laupahoehoe, Hawaii

Backyard Pharm is located on Haupialani Farm in Laupahoehoe, on the Hamakua Coast of Hawaii Island. It is blessed with Hamakua soil and a climate of balanced sunshine and rain and easterly trade winds. Because we are a small backyard farm, we give each plant a special place in our family and are able to give it loving care and watch it as it grows. We develop a relationship with the plant over time. This is a part of the medicine and adds to the healing properties of the plant. We also garden by the Hawaiian moon calendar and natural, organic methods and we use no toxics or non-organic fertilizers or pesticides.

In addition to growing healing plants, Haupialani also provides most all veggies and fruits for the 3 people who live there and accounts for 70-80% of the food that we eat. Haupialani also has a flock of muscovy ducks that provide eggs and meat, baby ducks and also natural fertilizer for our plants. We also have 5 cat friends who sometime help us in the gardens and provide many sweet purrs and love and moments of entertainment.
